On The Inside: Art by Incarcerated LGBTQ+ Artists
On the Inside was an exhibition of art created by incarcerated individuals who identify as LGBTQ+. The exhibition was planned in collaboration with WSU Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies faculty and supported curriculum of WGSS classes and Studio Art classes.
The entire gallery was covered in reproduced drawings and quotes by incarcerated individuals. In the middle of the gallery was a room, constructed to the exact measurements of a solitary confinement cell, that contained information about the vast problems of incarceration in America and the risks of violence LGBTQ incarcerated people face on a daily basis. There was also information on how to send LGBTQ people text messages of support.
This exhibition has previously been shown at museums such as Craft Contemporary and the Abrons Art Center in New York City. Winona State is the first institution of higher education to host this exhibition.
This exhibition was co-curated by Tatiana Von Furstenburg, Eline Mul, Mary Jo Kiinker, and Roger Boulay.
